In our experience, beginning with a single use case has proven to be a powerful way to create value for our clients. During a recent project at one of our clients with a small data team, demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. We defined one clear use case and set up the Fabric environment. Instead of extracting all possible data sources, we initially loaded just one. We then processed this data through each stage in our environment, exploring various features in Fabric such as lakehouses, data warehouses, data pipelines, data flows, and notebooks. This approach allowed us to gain valuable experience and provided the client with a deeper understanding of Fabric’s capabilities, helping them envision their modern data platform with more data added.

This iterative approach ensures that your platform remains aligned with business processes while minimizing risks and costs that are often associated with large implementations. Starting small allows to quickly achieve impact, gain experience and build a solid foundation to expand the platform step by step.

The hidden power of integration

One of Fabric’s most underrated strengths is its integration across the entire Microsoft ecosystem. Whether connecting to Azure Data Factory, Power BI, or other Microsoft tools, Fabric ensures a seamless experience. Very recognizable for many data engineers are setups where Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse Analytics pipelines must run sequentially, both relying on each other. This typically requires linking both tools. With Microsoft Fabric, such dependencies are eliminated as it combines features from different tools into one interface.

The integration extends beyond tools; it’s about creating a unified data strategy. Fabric’s structured workspaces and lakehouses encourage teams to organize their data thoughtfully, reducing the risk of data silos and ensuring insights are always based on a single version of the truth. This prevents multiple versions of data from circulating among different teams, as everyone uses the same data source.

Moreover, Fabric simplifies data governance. With role-based access controls, organizations can easily manage who can view or modify data, ensuring sensitive information remains protected while enabling collaboration across teams.

Take, for example, the notebooks in Fabric. Compared to similar tools in platforms like Azure Synapse, Fabric’s notebooks benefit from significantly faster Spark cluster startup times. This means data engineers and analysts can work more efficiently, spending less time waiting for clusters to start and more time delivering results.

Fabric also supports advanced use cases, such as using separate capacities for development and production environments. This ensures that heavy workloads in one environment won’t disrupt critical operations in another. It also prevents new developments, which are not yet ready for production, from causing current processes to fail. For instance, we implemented a strategy for a recent client where each environment was allocated its own workspace.

Additionally, Fabric’s deployment pipelines simplify the process of moving code between environments. Instead of setting up complex deployment pipelines in a separate tool like Azure DevOps, these pipelines are integrated into Fabric itself. Although they do not yet offer the same level of functionality as Azure DevOps release pipelines, they offer significantly faster setup time and lower technical barriers to get started. Be aware though to carefully plan where to create these deployment pipelines and who has access to them, as misuse can cause production environments to break, such as by prematurely pushing changes to production while still in the testing phase.

Breaking down the myths around data platforms

Advanced data platforms are often perceived as exclusive to large enterprises with massive budgets and dedicated teams. Microsoft Fabric challenges this notion by offering an accessible, scalable solution suitable for both smaller businesses with limited resources and larger companies with extensive budgets. We’ve already worked with Fabric in both types of organizations and can conclude that there is something interesting for everyone.

For organizations already familiar with Power BI, adopting Fabric will feel like a natural progression. The platform incorporates the same intuitive interface, allowing users to benefit from existing skills and knowledge. Business users without the technical expertise can navigate Fabric’s features as well, making adoption across the organization easier. This familiarity significantly reduces the learning curve for your team compared to starting to work with other technologies.

Additionally, Fabric’s unified design eliminates the need to combine and integrate multiple tools for data ingestion, transformation, and analysis. Everything you need, whether it’s managing data flows, building analytics models, or creating dashboards, is in one place. This integration not only reduces complexity but can also lower costs, making Fabric an attractive option for smaller companies operating on tight budgets.
